CPA = ad spend / orders: $600 of ads that bring 40 orders is a $15 CPA. Break-even CPA = average order value x margin before ads: a $45 order with a 40% margin leaves $18 to spend on getting that order. Pay $15 and you keep $3; pay $20 and you lose $2 on every sale.

CPA and ROAS are two views of the same campaign: a $15 CPA on a $45 order is a 3x ROAS.
